Mutant League Boxing

Description

Seriously, why was there never a Mutant League Boxing game back in the 16-bit era? It would have been an ideal follow-up to the football and hockey games, with heaps of scope for outlandish fighters and loopy special moves; Punch-Out! with even barmier goings-on than usual, essentially. But no. Tsk.

Anyway, this particular piccy was inspired by the marvellous comicky work of Jeff Martin, creator of Heat: The Space Age of Pro Wrestling, Where is Zog? and Hockeypocalypse. It was the latter series, which follows the splendidly entertaining adventures of a mutant ice hockey team in post-apocalyptic Canada, that prompted me to get doodling; a humorous aside during one story mentions the notion of post-apocalyptic boxing, and the mutant folk featured in the comic include gunky blob blokes and deer persons, so the piece practically drew itself.

These two are characters of my own devising; the big green guy is Silas “Sludger” Magoo, and the equally big and somewhat slovenly stag fellow is Barney “Iron Hooves” Balonki. They’re super-heavyweight sluggers of the none-too-sophisticated variety, as is perhaps obvious, and they’re not at all popular with the boxing arena cleaning staff, who weary of having to scrub all the slime and hair off the canvas following their encounters.

All of Mr Martin’s comics make for smashing reading; issues of Hockeypocalypse and Where is Zog? can be purchased here, and Heat can be perused online just over here. You lucky people!
