Watcha vs Jersey Devil

The terrifically talented Monsterfink [link] has a great knack for coming up with spiffy monster characters, and The Watchamacallit – a large, irritable amalgam of several dozen different animals, as seen here: [link] ), is one of my favourites. Mr Fink has been charting his exploits in vastly entertaining comic form for some time now, and just lately he’s been on tour encountering a variety of other monsters and bashing them up, because – as Watcha himself has pointed out – when monsters meet, they tend not to get on that well. Godzilla can vouch for this.

Thus inspired, I thought it might be fun to pit the big orange lug against one of the snaggled-toothed goons from Mr Fink’s monstrous menagerie he hasn’t yet encountered – and it seemed to me that the ideal candidate was The Jersey Devil, pictured here: [link] . I reckon it makes for a pretty good match-up; they’re more or less even in terms of size, strength and dangerous sharp bits, and it’s a pleasing colour combination to boot. But who’s going to walk away the winner? Jersey’s clearly giving as good as he gets, despite being thwacked on the bonce with one of his own antlers, but Watcha isn’t known for taking second place on the punch-up podium. I shall leave the final outcome to your imaginations. Personally, I like to think they realised it was all a hilarious misunderstanding, shook hands (well, hooves and claws) and went for a beer at the Demon Drink Bar and Grill, where they both got hammered and ended up clobbering each other again.

I had a smashing time putting this one together; both characters were huge fun to draw, and I was most pleased with how the background turned out. From doodling the outlines of the trees to finishing the colouring on them, it took just a couple of hours to complete, which is pretty good going for me. And I finally figured out how to do the shadows without half a day of increasingly bad-tempered mouse-clicky shape drawing. Hurrah!

The Watchamacallit and this particular incarnation of The Jersey Devil are undeniably the copyright of Monsterfink. Don’t go infringing it, because you’ll make him angry. And you won’t have any limbs left when he’s angry.
